Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia (born 14 May 1966) is a Nigerian catholic priest and politician from Mbangur, Mbadede in Vandeikya Local Government Area of Benue State. Alia was elected governor of Benue State as a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2023.

Born to the family of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Katsina Alia. His father and mother are from the Tiv tribe.

Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia became a famous priest in Nigeria following his miraculous power of healing.

He started serving God at the Cathedral Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Makurdi, in Benue state. From there, Fr Alia started his healing mass with a small congregation which usually takes place every Saturday.

This healing mass gradually became a diocesan kind of activity that attracted parishioners from other churches following his amazing power of healing.

People who came and received healing from their various sicknesses started circulating the message to their friends and family and from there, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia’s healing mass became the talk of every house in the state and across the country.

He was later sent to the Vatican for the confirmation of his healing power due to envy and jealousy from other priests who insisted that Alia’s gift of healing is not real.

However, it was verified that Alia’s healing power is pure, that it’s a gift from God, not fake as they claimed.

He spend a couple of times in the Vatican, United States, and returned to Nigeria but this time he was moved from the Cathedral Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help to ST Thomas Catholic Church, Anum, located opposite the first gate of Benue State University, Makurdi.

Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia continued with his priest work in the new place and even help in building the church into a wonderful structure.

However, he was later transferred to Vandeikya (his local government) to continue with his service to God at St Paul’s Catholic Church, Ikyaator, following the creation of Gboko and Katsina-Ala, Dioceses.

Educational Background

Rev Fr Hyacinth Iormen Alia attended his elementary education at Agidi, in Mbatiav, Gboko local government of Benue state.

In 1983, he gained admission to St James Minor seminary where he obtained his General Certificate of Education (GCE).

Alia’s commitment to serving God as a Catholic Priest went to St. Augustine’s Seminary, Jos (an affiliate of the University of Ibadan).

He later acquired a Diploma in Religious studies in 1987. In 1990, he furthered his education and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Sacred Theology at an affiliate of Urbaniana University, Rome.

Due to his love for education, he migrated to Bronx NY, USA, in 1999 and acquired a Master of Arts Degree in Religious Education (Psychology and Counseling).

In 2004, Rev Fr Hyacinth Iormen Alia proceed to Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the USA for another master of Arts Degree in Biomedical Ethics. He also went further and acquired his Doctorate Degree in the same course and at the same University, the following year.

Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia is a man with a lot of passion for rendering the services of God. This has made him furthermore with his education by undergoing professional training courses.

He has certificates in about 4 bodies across the country and he is also a member of the bodies. These include:

After he declared his interest to run for the governorship election, he was suspended by the Catholic Diocese of Gboko, a place he was serving.

According to them, “the mother church does not allow her clerics to get involved in partisan politics on their own Ex can. 285, 3 CIC. You are aware that my son, your brother, and your priest have purchased the party forms to contest for the Governor of Benue State under the All Progressives Congress (APC), which is totally against our vocation”.

However, he went further with his governorship ambition hence the call to represent and rescue his people was very important, according to him.

He also faced a lot of crises after he was declared the winner of the APC gubernatorial primaries. This was coming from his party rivals who claims that the primaries were not free and fair.

Notwithstanding, on Tuesday, August 23, 2022, he was finally presented with the INEC Letter of Acknowledgement as the governorship candidate of the party for the 2023 general elections.

Rev Fr Fyacinth Iormen Alia Declared the Winner of Benue Governorship Election 2023

On the 21st of March 2023, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, was declared the winner of the 2023 governorship elections in Benue State by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

He won the election by polling total votes of 473,933 effectively surpassing his nearest opponent, Mr. Titus Uba of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered a total of 223,913 votes. The third position was occupied by the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Herman Hembe, who secured 41,881 votes.
